Grassroots live music venues are the heart of the live music scene and face increasing difficulties keeping their doors open. Looking towards a sustainable future for the live music ecosystem, WAM presents an evening with Churchill Fellow and RMIT researcher, Dr Sam Whiting.
Dr Whiting undertook over 100 interviews with venues, industry bodies, musicians, and live music advocates across Europe, the UK and Canada to inform an understanding of how we can keep Australian grassroots venues alive and well.
This talk will explore why the standard venue operating model needs to change and what alternative structures, including not-for-profit, charitable, and membership models, could look like for Australian venues. It will also look at initiatives regarding collective, community and public ownership of venue properties to secure them in the long-term, and what it would take to make them work.
About the Speaker: Sam is a Vice-Chancellor’s Senior Research Fellow at RMIT University and 2024 Churchill Fellow. His research is primarily concerned with issues of capital, labour, and value as they relate to the cultural economy. Dr Whiting’s previous research has included work with Creative Australia, APRA/AMCOS, Sound NSW, SA Music Development Office, City of Adelaide, National Live Music Office, and City of Melbourne. Dr Whiting's recent book, Small Venues: Precarity, Vibrancy and Live Music, is out now through Bloomsbury, and his Churchill report is available here:…
