About

Step back into a little-known chapter of Lake Macquarie’s wartime history on this guided walk through the Wangi Wangi Gun Emplacements. Explore the surviving four gun pits and command post of this secret military installation, built in 1942-43 to defend the strategically important Rathmines Catalina Flying Boat Base during World War Two.

At a time when the threat of Japanese invasion was considered very real, four powerful 3.7-inch anti-aircraft guns stood ready at the site, capable of firing 22.2 kg shells over distances of up to 7.6 kilometres. Learn about the vital role these defences played in protecting one of Australia’s most important wartime training and operations bases, and discover the often-overlooked contribution of the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS), whose members were essential to the operation of the battery.
